Keyword density is the amount of times a keyword or specific phrase is used on a web page compared to the total amount of words on that page.
In the 1990's search engines where still at an early stage and keyword density was one of the key factors as to how a page ranked in the SERPS.
Web masters soon became wise to the importance of keyword density to help a web site rank better, but some web masters would abuse this by placing a particular keyword on a page an excessive amount of times resulting in a spammy page. The search engines adapted their algorithms making keyword density a minor factor in the ranking of a web page and instead looked at other factors of a website for ranking.
In today's world of SEO the excessive use of keywords on a web page is a major no no and is referred to as keyword stuffing and is considered to be a black hat technique that will result in the de-ranking of a web page. Many people involved in SEO would consider a keyword density of around 1% to 3% optimal.
Below is a fantastic video from Google that helps explain how keyword density relates to a web pages ranking.

SEOQuake
ReplyDeleteSEOQuake is one of the most popular SEO toolboxes. It’s an extension that displays an SEO overview of any given page through a toolbar or SERP overlay. It can show the total number of indexed pages, domain age, social shares and external links.
This tool’s shining quality is its fluidity. Instead of individually checking sites through a standalone tool, you can view real time stats as you browse.
SEOQuake also offers a free on-page audit tool so that you know if there are any errors on your site – and, of course, they offer tips on how to correct these errors. Once you land on the page, just click the icon on the toolbar area.
